Salvia
With upright flower spikes and aromatic foliage, Salvias bring colour and texture to sunny borders and containers. These hardy perennials attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, offering a nectar source throughout the season. From soft lavenders and blues to deep purples and fiery reds, their blooms create striking vertical accents, while grey-green leaves add subtle contrast and fragrance.

At J. Parker’s, you can explore Salvias that are perfect for sun-filled borders and containers. The Salvia nemorosa Collection offers compact violet-blue spikes ideal for edging, while Salvia ‘Hot Lips’ adds playful red-and-white blooms that attract pollinators. Check out a selection of complementary varieties for extended flowering and layered colour.
Where to plant Salvia
Salvias thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, tolerating occasional dry spells. You can plant them in borders, raised beds, or containers where their flower spikes can be appreciated, and alongside perennials or grasses that offer contrasting forms.
Companion plants
We recommend pairing Salvias with sun-loving perennials such as Rudbeckia, Echinacea and Coreopsis for colour and pollinator appeal. In containers, trailing plants such as Calibrachoa or Nepeta soften edges and create overflowing summer displays.
Growing Salvia
In fertile, well-drained soil, Salvias settle quickly and can continue flowering through the season. Removing spent blooms often extends the display, and a hard trim in late winter or early spring usually encourages fresh, vigorous growth. Once established, they remain hardy and drought-tolerant, providing long-lasting colour with minimal fuss.
