Your Daffodil questions answered
When to plant daffodil bulbs
Daffodil, or Narcissus, bulbs should be planted in early Autumn. Ideally this is September but don't worry if they are planted a little later than this. If you are planting your bulbs in pots, make sure to do this in Spring before they start to flower.
Where should I plant my daffodil bulbs?
Daffodils are easy, low-maintenance bulbs and are also perfect for beginners. They can be planted almost anywhere in the garden so long as you avoid planting them a totally shaded area. For a greater effect, plant the bulbs in groups as this will give you a stunning display come spring time.
Daffodil bulbs can also be planted in pots and other containers. Plant them in the same position as you would if planting in ground, being sure to avoid totally shaded areas. They can be planted on their own or with other spring-flowering bulbs for a colorful display. If plating on their own, consider adding taller species in the middle of the pot with smaller growing species bordering the outside for a display that will pack a punch.
When should I water and feed my daffodils?
Watering
After planting, water your daffodil bulbs well to ensure that the soil settles. This will ensure that there are no air pockets around the bulbs. Daffodil bulbs should not need additional watering unless there has been an extended period of no rain.
If your bulbs are planted in pots, it is likely that the soil will dry out far quicker. In this case, you should make sure that potted Daffodil bulbs are watered regularly to avoid the soil drying out completely. This should be done until the foliage completely dies away at the end of their growing season.
Feeding
Daffodil bubs will generally flower well in their first year. However, in the years proceeding, they will benefit from additional feeding to keep them healthy and flowering for years to come. You can use a general purpose feed or a high-potassium feed such as tomato feed. Fertilising should be done every 7-10 days once the first shoots appear in spring.
