Celery – Common Celery is a vegetable crop grown for its crisp, aromatic stalks, widely used in salads, soups and cooking. It offers fresh, crunchy stems with a distinctive flavour and reaches around 30–45cm at maturity. It is best grown in rich, moist, well-drained soil in a sunny or lightly shaded position, with a typical cropping period of around 120–140 days from sowing.

Sow seeds indoors from March to April in trays or small pots filled with moist seed compost. Place in a warm, bright position at around 18–21°C and keep the compost consistently moist. Germination usually takes 14–21 days. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, prick them out into individual pots and grow on in a bright, cool place. Harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost, spacing plants 25–30cm apart in rich, moisture-retentive soil. Water regularly and keep the soil consistently moist to encourage strong, tender stems. Celery is typically ready to harvest from late summer to early autumn.
