Sow from February to June on the surface of a good quality, use a free draining seed compost and lightly cover with a fine sprinkling of vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 10-13C (50-55F) or seal inside a clear polythene bag and place in a dark position until the first seedlings show, which usually takes 1-3 months. Keep the compost damp but not wet. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3") pots and grow Delphinium plants on in cooler conditions. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions over 7 - 10 days before planting outdoors. Plant Delphiniums at a distance of 45cm (18") apart on moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Choose a sunny site and protect from snails and slugs.
