Convallaria is an elegant perennial, known for its nodding, bell-shaped flowers and delicate, sweet spring fragrance. Its glossy green leaves form tidy clumps that add structure and texture to borders, edges and underplantings. Hardy and easy to establish, it brings understated charm and subtle seasonal interest with minimal effort.

At J. Parker’s, our robust Convallarias are ready to plant, ideal for creating natural drifts in shaded borders, under trees or in containers. Known as the lily of the valley, these perennials provide consistent performance and quiet elegance - a favourite for spring displays.

Where to plant Convallaria

Convallaria thrives in partial to full shade, particularly beneath deciduous shrubs and trees. It prefers fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil and tolerates a variety of conditions if moisture is steady. Once established, it spreads gradually via rhizomes, forming a low evergreen or semi-evergreen groundcover that brings continuity to woodland-style plantings.

Companion plants for Convallaria

Convallaria pairs beautifully with shade-tolerant perennials that contrast or complement its blooms. Ferns and Hostas provide bold textural interest, while Pulmonarias and Epimediums extend visual appeal before and after flowering. Low-growing grasses or shade-loving Carex add gentle movement, creating layered, naturalistic planting schemes in dappled light.

Growing Convallaria

We suggest planting these Convallaria loose roots in autumn or early spring just below the soil surface, spacing to allow gradual naturalisation. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch with compost or leaf mould to retain moisture. Low-maintenance once established, divide crowded clumps every few years to maintain vigour.
