Choosing Low-Maintenance Plants for Your Garden

A beautiful garden doesn't have to become a second job.

While every garden needs a little care, choosing the right plants can make a big difference to how much time you spend maintaining it. By picking out varieties that are naturally hardy and well-suited to their surroundings, you can create a display that largely gets on with growing, instead of constantly watering, staking, pruning or replacing plants.

And low-maintenance doesn't have to mean boring. There are plenty of plants that bring colour, fragrance and seasonal interest while keeping the workload manageable

What makes a plant low-maintenance?

There's no such thing as a completely maintenance-free plant. New plants need watering while they establish, and even the toughest varieties will occasionally need a tidy-up.

The difference is that some plants are naturally more forgiving. Hardy varieties that cope well with the conditions they're planted in, don't need constant support, and can manage periods of drier weather once established are generally easier to live with.

The best place to start is with the garden itself. Think about how much sun and shelter you have, how well your soil drains and how much space is available to you. A plant in the right position is far less likely to need rescuing later on.

Pots and containers

Low-maintenance gardening isn't limited to borders. Pots and containers can be an easy way to add colour to patios, balconies and smaller outdoor spaces, while also giving you more control over where plants are positioned.

They're particularly handy for plants that like good drainage or a sunnier spot. And when space is limited, a few carefully chosen containers can create a colourful display without filling the garden with planting that needs constant attention.

Perennials

Perennials are a natural starting point for a lower-maintenance garden. Rather than replacing them at the end of the season, these plants return year after year, giving you a dependable display with less seasonal replanting.

Hardy Geraniums

Hardy Geraniums are wonderfully versatile. Depending on the variety, they can work in sunny borders, partial shade, containers or as ground cover, with flowers ranging from soft pinks and whites to richer purples and blues.

They're long-lived and easy to grow, with little intervention needed beyond an occasional trim. That flexibility makes them particularly handy when you want to fill different parts of the garden without having to find a completely different plant for every space.

Salvias

If you're after plenty of colour from a relatively compact plant, Salvias are worth a look. Their upright flower spikes bring height to borders and containers, with shades ranging from rich purples and pinks to softer tones.

Many varieties have a long flowering period, extending through summer and into early autumn. They generally prefer a sunny position with well-drained soil, although hardiness varies between types.

Salvia greggii 'Cherry Lips' is a particularly distinctive option, producing purple-pink and white flowers alongside fragrant foliage. It's also suitable for growing in pots and containers.

Echinacea

For bold summer colour, Echinacea brings a cheerful daisy-like display to sunny borders. Its sturdy stems mean the flowers can be left standing after they fade, adding structure as the season progresses rather than needing to be cut back immediately.

It's also able to cope with spells of drier weather once established, making it a useful addition to a planting scheme where you want to reduce the need for regular watering.

Echinacea purpurea 'Primadonna White' is one of the varieties available from our range, offering crisp white flowers for a lighter summer display.

Shrubs

Shrubs can provide the permanent framework of a lower-maintenance garden. They return each year, occupy more space than individual bedding plants and can offer interest across several seasons.

Lavender

Lavender brings fragrant foliage and beautiful flower spikes to sunny borders, pathways and containers. It's naturally suited to drier conditions once established, which means it doesn't need regular watering in a suitable position.

Good drainage is essential, however. Lavender prefers free-draining soil and full sun, so it's worth getting the planting position right from the beginning. A light annual prune will help keep plants compact and encourage fresh growth.

Viburnums

Viburnums are a good example of getting plenty of interest from a single shrub. Depending on the variety, they can offer flowers, attractive foliage and berries at different points throughout the year.

They're also adaptable when it comes to positioning. Our Viburnum tinus can be planted in sunny, partially shaded or shaded positions, and its glossy evergreen foliage is followed by clusters of cream-white flowers and berries.

Buddlejas

If you want to make space for more wildlife, Buddleja is hard to overlook. Its long flower spikes are rich in nectar and are particularly attractive to butterflies, making it a popular addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.

The shrubs also put on a generous summer display, with flowers available in shades including purple, pink, red and white. Buddleja is straightforward to grow in a sunny position, although an annual prune is needed to keep it in shape and encourage fresh growth.

Skimmias

Not every low-maintenance plant needs to make a big summer statement. Skimmia is a slow-growing evergreen that provides glossy foliage and structure throughout the year.

It's particularly useful in shadier parts of the garden, where many sun-loving plants may struggle. Skimmia is also well-suited to containers and needs very little attention once established.
