Your Tulip questions answered
When to plant tulip bulbs
Tulip bulbs can be planted at any time from early to late autumn. You can even give them a run for their money by planting them up to January if you forget to get them out on time. In fact, the later you plant them, the less likely they are to develop tulip fire.
Where should I plant my tulip bulbs?
To get the most out of your tulip bulbs, they should be planted somewhere which get plenty of sun in well draining soil. Typically, tulips will give their best display in the first year, however, if given the right conditions, they will bloom year after year.
When should I water and feed my tulips?
Borders & Beds
If your tulip bulbs are planted in borders and beds, they won't typically need watering as rainfall will do this for you. If, after a dry period, the soil looks dry then it may be best to water them to ensure the best possible yield.
Pots
If your tulip bulbs are planted in pots, then it is best to keep them well-watered throughout their growing season. If your pots get rainfall and the soil starts to look too soggy, then we recommend moving the pot to a sheltered location so that the soil has enough time to drain properly before it's next watering.
Feeding
Feeds rich in potassium, such as tomato feed, are best for many blooms and tulips are no exception. Once visible growth has appeared, feed once weekly until the leaves start to yellow and die back.
