Delphinium
Few summer perennials can rival the impact of Delphiniums. Their tall spires and vivid colours - from bold blues to soft pastels - make them a standout in any border from June to August.

At J. Parker’s, we offer a selection of Delphiniums suited to many garden styles and spaces. Consider the rich blues of ‘Summer Skies’, the vibrant tones of ‘Blue Jay’, or the pure white spires of ‘Galahad’. These varieties are available either as 7cm pot-grown plants or as first-grade loose roots - check individual product details for specifics.
Where to plant Delphiniums
Delphiniums thrive in sunny, sheltered spots with fertile, well-drained soil. The back of a border is ideal, whether in cottage-style or formal gardens. In heavier soils, raised beds or improved drainage will help them flourish.
Companion plants for Delphiniums
Delphiniums shine when paired with the right companions. Geraniums soften their base, while roses and peonies add classic charm. Lupins and other vertical bloomers echo their height, while lighter masterworts and bellflowers brighten the border. Experimenting with combinations often produces the most striking results.
Growing Delphiniums
Plant Delphiniums in spring or early autumn in soil that retains moisture but drains well. Taller varieties benefit from staking as they grow. Keep plants well-watered and feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser to support strong flowering. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage a second flush, cut back in autumn to keep borders tidy, and divide clumps every few seasons to maintain healthy, vigorous growth.
