Ferns
Ferns create a serene, natural texture in shaded corners, their fronds unfolding to form layered, verdant foliage. Hardy and versatile, evergreen or deciduous varieties flourish in moist, humus-rich soils, bringing structure and seasonal interest to woodland edges, borders, and underplanting. Delicate Athyrium fronds contrast with the bold, arching foliage of Dryopteris, adding depth and seasonal change to shaded spaces.

At J. Parker’s, we have a variety of hardy Ferns suited to shaded and sheltered garden spaces. From the rich copper and burgundy fronds of Athyrium niponicum ‘Ursula’s Red’ to the warm golden foliage and architectural form of Dryopteris erythrosora ‘Golden Brilliance’, these Ferns offer varied textures and forms that work beautifully in woodland borders, under trees, or in containers.
Where to plant Ferns
Ferns prefer shaded or dappled light and consistently moist, well-drained soil. Ideal locations include woodland gardens, beneath trees or shrubs, or along sheltered paths. Avoid dry, exposed areas, as Ferns require humidity and can suffer in full sun.
Companion plants
Pair Ferns with other shade-loving perennials such as Hosta, Astilbe, or Pulmonaria for layered foliage and contrasting textures. They also complement spring bulbs like Snowdrops and Crocuses, while spiky or arching perennials such as Brunnera or Epimedium provide visual interest and dynamic form. Planting in clusters enhances the naturalistic, woodland effect.
Growing Ferns
Spring and autumn are the best times to plant Ferns, and incorporating a little compost or leaf mould should do wonders to help establishment. Water regularly during dry periods until roots are established; once settled, Ferns are low-maintenance but appreciate occasional moisture. Remove old or damaged fronds in early spring to reveal fresh growth. Over time, Ferns form dense clumps that add elegance and a calming presence to shaded gardens.
