Fennel – Common Fennel is a hardy herb grown for its aromatic seeds and feathery foliage, often used in cooking and herbal teas. It offers delicate, aniseed-flavoured leaves and reaches around 120–150cm at maturity. It is best grown in well-drained, fertile soil in a full sun position, with seeds typically ready to harvest from late summer to early autumn.

Sow seeds directly outdoors from spring to early summer once the soil has warmed. Choose a sunny position with well-drained, fertile soil. Sow seeds about 1cm deep in rows spaced roughly 30–45cm apart. Keep the soil moist while seeds germinate, which usually takes around 10–14 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them to around 30cm apart to allow plants to develop fully.
