Common Lovage is a perennial herb grown for its aromatic leaves and stems, commonly used to flavour soups, stews, and salads. It offers tall, robust green foliage with a strong, celery-like flavour that can reach 200cm at maturity. It is best grown in moist, well-drained soil in a full sun to partial shade position, with a typical cropping period of 90–120 days from sowing for leaf harvest.

Sow lovage seeds indoors in the spring in small pots or seed trays filled with moist, well-drained seed compost. Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite, as they need some light to aid germination. Keep the compost consistently moist and place in a warm, bright position around 18–20°C. Germination can take 14–21 days, so patience is required. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, prick them out into individual pots and continue growing them in a bright, sheltered spot. Transplant outdoors after the last frost, spacing plants around 60–90 cm apart in fertile, well-drained soil with full sun to partial shade. Regular watering and occasional feeding will encourage strong growth. Leaves can be harvested continuously throughout the season.
