Common Peppermint is an easy to grow herb that is grown for its aromatic leaves, widely used in teas, culinary dishes and natural remedies. It offers bright green leaves with a refreshing, cooling flavour and reaches around 30–60 cm at maturity. It is best grown in moist, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade, with a typical cropping period of 70–90 days from sowing for leaf harvest.

Sow peppermint seeds indoors Spring time, in small pots or trays filled with moist, well-drained seed compost. Lightly press the seeds onto the surface without covering them, as they need light to germinate. Keep the compost consistently moist and place in a warm, bright position around 18–21°C. Germination usually takes 10–15 days. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, prick them out into individual pots and grow on in a sheltered, bright spot. Peppermint prefers moist soil and can be transplanted outdoors after the last frost, ideally into a partially shaded or sunny location. Peppermint can also be grown in containers to control its spreading habit, as it can become invasive if planted directly in the garden.
