Common Rosemary is a herb grown for its fragrant foliage and culinary use. It offers aromatic, needle-like evergreen leaves with a robust flavour and reaches around 60–100cm at maturity. It is best grown in well-drained, light soil in a full sun, sheltered position, with leaves ready to harvest throughout the year once established.

Sow seeds indoors from spring. Fill pots or trays with a fine, well-drained seed compost and gently firm the surface. Scatter the seeds thinly and lightly cover with a fine layer of compost, as they need light to germinate. Water gently and keep the compost moist but not waterlogged. Place in a warm position at around 18–21°C. Germination can be slow and may take 14–28 days (sometimes longer), so be patient. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into individual pots and grow on in a bright position before gradually hardening off and planting outside after the risk of frost has passed.
