Citrullus lanatus ‘Sugar Baby’ is a watermelon grown for its sweet, juicy dessert fruit. It offers compact growth, smooth dark green rind, and vibrant red flesh with excellent flavour, reaching around 20–30 cm fruits (weighing approximately 3-4 kg each) at maturity. It is best grown in fertile, well drained soil and a warm, sheltered position in full sun, with a typical cropping period of around 70–80 days from transplanting.

Choose a sunny spot with well-draining, fertile soil. Watermelons prefer soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.8. If sowing seeds indoors first, sow about 3-4 weeks before the last expected frost date. Directly sow seeds outdoors after the last frost, when the soil temperature reaches 21-27°C. Plant seeds 2.5 cm (1 inch) deep, spacing them about 90 cm apart. Water the seeds gently after sowing. Keep the soil moist but not soggy, especially during germination. Once the seedlings emerge, thin them to leave the strongest plants. Water consistently and mulch around the plants to keep moisture in and weeds out. Harvest when the fruits are fully ripe, typically 70-80 days after sowing.
