Agapanthus Back in Black
African Lily
CODE PE001
-
Agapanthus ‘Back in Black’ is a striking new variety of African lily, celebrated for its dramatic near-black stems and rich, deep violet-blue flowers. A modern showstopper with a bold presence, it brings sophisticated colour contrast and architectural form to contemporary and traditional Irish garden spaces alike.
Reaching a height of around 70–90cm, this deciduous perennial produces strong, upright black stems topped with rounded clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers from mid to late summer. Its unique dark colouring makes it particularly eye-catching in borders, gravel gardens, and stylish containers.
Agapanthus ‘Back in Black’ thrives in well-drained soil and a sunny position, where it can soak up the warmth of the Irish summer. While it’s hardy in many parts of Ireland, it may benefit from winter protection or container planting in colder inland areas. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires little maintenance.
